Things to do in Gloucester
The UK is one of the top tourist destinations in the world. One would think that this is an overstatement, but wait till you see and experience the rich history, culture and natural beauty embedded in Gloucester which lies to the South West of England. Everything about Gloucester is simply amazing. For example, the city, though an English one, has Roman origins. Mind you, it has been in existence since AD 97.
One of the things to do in Gloucester is to explore the many Roman inspired attractions in the city. Some of the finest of these attractions include the East Gate, which was one of the four access points to the city. The gate is quite old having being built by the Roman Army during the late AD 60’s. Some of the sections of the gate that are still visible are the horse pool and the South tower. Alternatively you could get the fill of an ancient Roman Villa built around AD 250. Though little remains of the villa, you can still see the complex, mosaic pavements and even the bathhouse complex. While at it, you may as well take in the beautiful scenery of the countryside that surrounds the ruins.
Nature lovers should and must visit the Cotswolds. So beautiful is the landscape here that it was designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty way back in 1966. There is reason to believe that Neolithic man once lived here. Similarly, there are mild traces of the Bronze Age and even the Iron Age. The towns and villages here are surprisingly picturesque and they complement the numerous parks, arboretums and gardens in the area. Make sure to catch glimpses of exotic birds and animals including deer. The Cotswold Wildlife Park, The Prinknash Bird and Deer Park and the Cotswold Falconry centre are good places to visit with your whole family.
Yet another thing to do in Gloucester is find out why it is reputed as a great cathedral town. The Gloucester Cathedral would be the best place to start. It is regarded as one of the most breath-taking cathedrals in England. It has been in existence for quite some time too, having been started as a nun’s abbey way back in the 7th century. It also has Gothic influences. Alternatively, get lost in the rich history of The St Mary De Crypt Church.
After a long day of moving up and down in search of the city’s best attractions, why not treat yourself to some well-deserved relaxation session at one of the many spas in Gloucester. Wyck Hill House Hotel & Spa, Chapel Spa and Elan Spa, which is at The Greenway Hotel, and Spa are just but some good examples of excellent spa destinations.
