Tips for First Times at a Spa

spa-tips

If you are a first timer at a Spa and you are feeling nervous, don’t worry, you are not alone. There are many people out there who have never been to a spa before. Spa etiquettes tend to be a source of anxiety for first timers but it is very simple and easy once you get to know the basics.

TURN OFF YOUR PHONE

You go to a spa to indulge yourself so the first golden rule is to switch off your phone as you can never relax answering calls and responding to text messages. Moreover, you will be disturbing others around you too.

ARRIVE EARLY

Give yourself plenty of time to get there as you do not want to stress before a massage. It is better to arrive ahead of the appointment time and relax than to arrive late and miss part of the treatment. Arriving early gives you the chance to leisurely change into your robe and enjoy a dip in the pool, a hot tub or the steam room.

TAKE A HOT SHOWER

It is nice to take a shower and freshen up before the treatment begins. It is important if you had a dip in the pool to wash off the chlorine.

SAY WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND

Proceed to the waiting room a few minutes before the scheduled time. When you make a message appointment, the receptionists generally enquire whether you prefer a male or a female therapist. Both are professionally trained to respect boundaries and use proper draping techniques so either should be fine. The therapist comes to get you when it’s time for the treatment and escorts you to the treatment room. Before the message, the therapist will instruct you to get up on the table face up or down and during the message you should feel free to say what’s on your mind. For example, more pressure, less pressure, extra blanket or adjusting the warmth of the message table.

CONVERSATION

It is up to you whether you want to have a conversation with the therapist or not. In case, the therapist is doing most of the talking and you are not in the mood, you can politely say that you want to take a light nap. The therapists will get the hint.

AFTER TREATMENT

After the treatment is done, the therapists will leave the room so take your time to get up after the treatment finishes but do not linger around for too long. There are other clients waiting. The therapists will knock before coming back into the room to help you if you require any help.
